What exactly is a newt?
A newt is my name for a plant I am or have raised from seed with care, patience, and joy. Each one begins with a whisper of hope, and nurtured daily by me, until it’s ready to meet its forever garden (or kitchen bench). You might call it a seedling... I call it a newt.
Why Seedlings, not Seeds?
For classrooms, seedlings (“newts”) are a must. Seeds often need 6–8 weeks just to sprout — and some never do.
That leaves too little time in a single school term, and can leave students feeling discouraged. Seedlings ensure every learner starts strong, every garden shows progress, and no one feels they’ve “done something wrong.”
What does “Seed to Hand” mean?
It means I grow your plant baby from the very beginning—from the moment it blinks open underground, all the way until it’s sturdy and ready to leave my care. It's a journey, and I walk every step of it barefoot, and bare handed.
Why adopt a newt?
Because I know how disappointing it is when, with the right intention, you buy seeds with the aim of growing your own vegetables, or flowers (we know how costly these are).
Then you pretty quickly realise that looking after a seed is so much more work than you thought.
Adopt-a-Newt was designed so you could:
- ,choose your newt(s), (edible, medicinal, native, whimsical, etc.) so you don't miss out on the newt(s) you love
- you could choose to pay a monthly fee, if you don't have the time to care for it and opt for me to raise it until you are ready. Each care package I offer is for the duration of various growth stage,
- get updates, photos, and finally your grown newt in hand.
How long does it take for a newt to grow?
Each plant grows at its own pace—some race ahead like wild things, and others nap between leaves. Most newts are with us for 4 to 12 weeks before they’re ready to move to their new home.
Please read The Growth Stages which details each stage of seed to hand.
Can I choose which newt I adopt?
Yes! You can choose a specific species or let us match you with one based on what you need—joy, calm, memory, colour, resilience. We believe plants find their people. And you don't have to choose just one, you know the saying..."More the merrier'>
Are newts grown organically?
Absolutely. No chemicals, no rush, no nonsense. Just rich compost, worm castings & wee, Seasol (natural liquid sea-weed fertiliser), rainwater and/or filtered water and our own two hands.I make my own potting mix, a little different for each category but mainly coconut fibre, perlite, compost, worm castings, a little propogation sand & seasol potting mix.
Do you post your newts?
No. Would you bundle your living babies in boxes, with no air and get tossed around by over-worked, under-paid postal workers?
Because I'm in Western Australia, I cannot post to other Australian states. I do offer a delivery service, the cost based on where each customer lives. Please contact me if you'd like a quote on delivery.
Any and all deliveries are done personally by myself or my dad (what would we do without our dads?)
What do I get when I adopt a newt?
You’ll receive:
- A lovingly grown plant
- A botanical-style Adoption Card
- Care guide written so you can easily read and easily follow the recommendations
- Optional daily (whatsapp), weekly (email) bi-weekly (whatsapp) or other weeklies photo & updates if you’re watching it grow from seed
What if my newt doesn’t survive?
All of my newts are grown from seed, then when their first true leaves have appeared, they are replanted in slightly bigger pots. The little sprouts that look frail, dull & unable to stay upright, I keep for myself. (I have a thing for runts...)
You will receive a detailed, easy to read & follow, care guide when you pick up your newt. I am available to offer assistance after you've taken your newt.
Plants are living beings, and sometimes even with love, they struggle. It's why we have the care packages, so you can let me continue the care until your newt has stronger legs and an even bigger personality. If your newt dies, my sincerest sympathies and whilst your newt can never be replaced, I am happy to give you a discount on future newts, though photos will be required.
I appreciate your understanding in this matter.

Is the cat drawing of a real cat?
It sure is. Meet my little man Tao. In 2024, I drove over to Brisbane to see my life-long friend, and as I'm a Vet Nurse, Animal Lover & Warrior, I visited shelters and foster homes during the 3 weeks I was there. Just to get some furry loves, I'm sure you understand.
Tao, who was three months and is actually nearly blind, chose me. It's as simple as that. We drove back to WA together, taking the Regional Highways, and camped, hiked, rested at hidden spots overlooking rivers, slept in the car, and in some hotels. Tao goes everywhere with me.
Not only is Tao real (and absolutely adored), he features in the Trading Card Series that students receive upon submitting their answers to the Newt & Nonsense Quiz & Treasure Hunt above.
Why mix animals with growing seedlings?
Animals & plants teach us so much. I'm a certified & experienced Vet Nurse, Certified in Animal Behaviour & Nutrition. My knowledge & experience with growing is just as extensive.
And I'm still learning. Not only do animals teach us how to show tolerance, responsibility, care, kindness, empathy (& so much more), they take on our pain, soak up our tears, suck up ridiculously to be fed. So pairing Paws & Petals is the natural next step.
Tending to plants allow our minds wonder, our hands to nurture and our soul to be soothed.
