How are the age bands structured?

Students participate in age-appropriate Soul Projects grouped into:

  • Wiggleworms (4–5)
  • Seedling Scouts (6–8)
  • Budlings (9–11)
  • Sassy Saplings (12–15)
  • Nearly Newts (16–17)

Each term brings new projects, themes, and learning pathways — so a Wiggleworm in Term 1 will have a completely different experience in Term 2.

What happens if a plant dies?

Every Newt in a class pack has been grown from seed and delivered only when thriving.

Children begin at the same starting point — no “failed seed,” no disappointment.

If something happens during the term, it becomes part of the learning journey: growth, change, resilience, and care.

What are Soul Projects?

Hands-on, mindful learning experiences woven through science, wellbeing, creativity, SEL, and environmental literacy.

Soul Projects are designed to:

  • strengthen self-awareness
  • build a sense of responsibility
  • encourage gentleness and empathy
  • celebrate individuality
  • help children reconnect with the present moment

Every project is printed and screen-free.

Why Seedlings, not Seeds?

For classrooms, seedlings (“newts”) are a must. Seeds often need 6–8 weeks just to sprout — and some never do. That leaves too little time in a single school term, and can leave students feeling discouraged.

Seedlings ensure every learner starts strong, every garden shows progress, and no one feels they’ve “done something wrong.”

What is the Wigglewood Hub?

The Hub is your homeschool private gateway for:

  • Homeschool only pricing
  • Soul Projects ordering
  • Term planning support
  • Inquiries and assistance

Access is approved via email & password verification.

Why no screens?

Mai-Newt exists to help children:

  • hold things in their hands
  • draw without autofill
  • write with their own stroke
  • observe the real world
  • slow down and be present

The entire program — teaching resources, student resources, and Soul Projects — is printed so that an internet connection isn’t needed.

Children experience tech-free learning except for one small moment each week:

How does payment work?

Parents who homeschool order through the Wigglewood Hub

Parents choose their:
Age Band
Newt Category

Delivery occurs once payment and signed T&Cs are returned

How is the program delivered to schools?

Each parent and child receives a complete Soul Project, which includes:

  • All teaching resources printed and ready to teach (no extra prep required)
  • Parent Resource Guides for every week of the term
  • Student Soul Project Journal Cards (printed, bound, classroom-ready)
  • Companion planting guides, care charts, observation logs
  • Hands-on tools and materials sized for students
  • Healthy seedlings (“newts”) grown and delivered so every child begins at the same starting point
  • Access to the Wigglewood Hub for digital downloads, updates and support

Everything is delivered in a single kit, organised by week and by age band, so parents can simply open the box and begin Week 1 immediately.

What do parents need to supply?

Nothing.

Everything you need is printed, included, and ready.

Can we have a free trial?

Because Grid & Grow & Wigglewood Newt Academy combines intellectual property, printed classroom materials, teaching guides, specialised equipment, and live seedlings, trials are not possible.

However, parents can begin with:

One single age-band Soul Project

Short-term pilot (1 term)
Wigglewood Hub

This allows you to trial the program on a smaller scale — with the full quality, resources, and integrity of the program intact, rather than a reduced “sample” that wouldn’t reflect the real experience.

Do the lessons change each term or semester?

Yes. Every age group has a fresh program each term, aligned with:

  • the WA Curriculum
  • Seasonal growing patterns
  • Age-appropriate STEM, SEL & literacy development
  • Practical gardening cycles

This ensures students don’t repeat material and continue to deepen skills, such as:

  • observation
  • recording
  • prediction
  • care routines
  • critical and creative thinking
  • soft skills (patience, teamwork, resilience)

A Term 1 Wiggleworm experience is completely different from a Term 2 Wiggleworm experience — but still recognisably “Wigglewood.”

What curriculum links does the program meet?

Every Class Pack includes clear alignment pages for:

  • Science (Biological Sciences)
  • HASS (Sustainability & Care)
  • Design & Technologies
  • English (Communication & Recording)
  • General Capabilities:
  • Critical & Creative Thinking
  • Personal & Social Capability
  • Ethical Understanding
  • Intercultural Understanding
  • Sustainability

The program has been mapped directly to WA Curriculum content descriptors for Years K–10.

How much preparation is required from parents?

None. Although you can spend a few minutes familiarising themselves with the content each week.

The program was designed specifically to reduce workload. Parents simply:

  1. Open the Parent Resource Pack
  2. Turn to Page 1
  3. Begin the Week 1 activity

All resources are pre-printed — observation charts, care logs, experiments, Newt & Nonsense challenges, weekly plans, and celebration materials.

No cutting, no photocopying, no searching online.

How do students access resources if there is no portal for them?

Wigglewood Newt Academy & Grid & Grow is intentionally screen-free.

Children receive printed resources only — booklets, posters, charts, care prompts, and hands-on projects.

This is a deliberate pedagogical choice:

  • supports wellbeing
  • reduces screen dependence
  • strengthens emotional regulation
  • encourages presence, patience, and real-world observation

The only digital element students interact with is the weekly Newt & Nonsense Challenge, completed with a parent's device.

Is the Wigglewood Hub for children?

No.

The Hub is for educators and parents — to access resources, guides, and support.

Children never need a login.

How are plants delivered?

All seedlings are:

  • grown in WA
  • hardened and acclimatised
  • transported in custom-protective packaging
  • delivered close to the date the program begins
  • grouped by class and labelled clearly

This ensures a smooth start and minimal risk.

Do I need an internet connection?

Only to download back-ups of your printable resources if you need.

The entire learning experience is designed to be tactile, mindful, screen-free, and grounded in the real world.

Do homeschooled students use the same program?

Yes — the Wigglewood Newt Academy is the homeschooling pathway, built from the same educational framework but adapted for:

  • single learners
  • family settings
  • mixed-age environments

Schools and homeschoolers use the same core philosophy — but with different delivery structures.

What exactly is a newt?

A newt is my name for a plant I am or have raised from seed with care, patience, and joy. Each one begins with a whisper of hope, and nurtured daily by me, until it’s ready to meet its forever garden (or kitchen bench). You might call it a seedling... I call it a newt.

What does “Seed to Hand” mean?

It means I grow your plant baby from the very beginning—from the moment it blinks open underground, all the way until it’s sturdy and ready to leave my care. It's a journey, and I walk every step of it barefoot, and bare handed.

Why adopt a newt?

Because I know how disappointing it is when, with the right intention, you buy seeds with the aim of growing your own vegetables, or flowers (we know how costly these are).

Then you pretty quickly realise that looking after a seed is so much more work than you thought.

Adopt-a-Newt was designed so you could:

  • ,choose your newt(s), (edible, medicinal, native, whimsical, etc.) so you don't miss out on the newt(s) you love
  • you could choose to pay a monthly fee, if you don't have the time to care for it and opt for me to raise it until you are ready. Each care package I offer is for the duration of various growth stage,
  • get updates, photos, and finally your grown newt in hand.

How long does it take for a newt to grow?

Each plant grows at its own pace—some race ahead like wild things, and others nap between leaves. Most newts are with us for 4 to 12 weeks before they’re ready to move to their new home.

Please read The Growth Stages which details each stage of seed to hand.

Can I choose which newt I adopt?

Yes! You can choose a specific species or let us match you with one based on what you need—joy, calm, memory, colour, resilience. We believe plants find their people. And you don't have to choose just one, you know the saying..."More the merrier'>

Are newts grown organically?

Absolutely. No chemicals, no rush, no nonsense. Just rich compost, worm castings & wee, Seasol (natural liquid sea-weed fertiliser), rainwater and/or filtered water and our own two hands.I make my own potting mix, a little different for each category but mainly coconut fibre, perlite, compost, worm castings, a little propogation sand & seasol potting mix.

Do you post your newts?

No. Would you bundle your living babies in boxes, with no air and get tossed around by over-worked, under-paid postal workers?

Because I'm in Western Australia, I cannot post to other Australian states. I do offer a delivery service, the cost based on where each customer lives. Please contact me if you'd like a quote on delivery.

Any and all deliveries are done personally by myself or my dad (what would we do without our dads?)

What do I get when I adopt a newt?

You’ll receive:

  • A lovingly grown plant
  • A botanical-style Adoption Card
  • Care guide written so you can easily read and easily follow the recommendations
  • Optional daily (whatsapp), weekly (email) bi-weekly (whatsapp) or other weeklies photo & updates if you’re watching it grow from seed

What if my newt doesn’t survive?

All of my newts are grown from seed, then when their first true leaves have appeared, they are replanted in slightly bigger pots. The little sprouts that look frail, dull & unable to stay upright, I keep for myself. (I have a thing for runts...)

You will receive a detailed, easy to read & follow, care guide when you pick up your newt. I am available to offer assistance after you've taken your newt.

Plants are living beings, and sometimes even with love, they struggle. It's why we have the care packages, so you can let me continue the care until your newt has stronger legs and an even bigger personality. If your newt dies, my sincerest sympathies and whilst your newt can never be replaced, I am happy to give you a discount on future newts, though photos will be required.

I appreciate your understanding in this matter.

What’s included when I adopt a Newt?

You receive a thriving seedling, beautifully labelled, and grown with handcrafted Wiggle Juice. Each Newt is part of a bigger learning experience shaped around curiosity, observation, and care.

What Newt categories are available?

Medicinal Newts — gentle healers with time-honoured stories

Pretty Newts — colour, whimsy, and soft beauty

Perfect for Dried Flowers — texture and shape for everlasting arrangements

Edible Newts — vegetables, herbs, and nourishing plants

Natives — seedlings grown for WA’s unique climate

Cacti & Succulents — resilient, structural, and sculptural

Indoor Newts (coming soon)

SOUL PROJECTS FAQs

Collapsible content

Why are the Soul Projects printed?

Because I want children to:

  • use their hands
  • make real marks on paper
  • sit with their thoughts
  • feel the texture of the page
  • learn without scrolling
  • connect deeply with the world around them

Screens offer convenience, but they take away presence.

Mai-Newt is built to restore that.

Are the projects therapeutic?

They are intentionally calming, nurturing, and grounding — but not clinical therapy.

They help children slow down, feel proud, and reconnect with themselves and their Newt.

Are Soul Projects available to the general public, outside of schools & homeschoolers?

No. Adopt a Newt is specifically for everyday homes to add a newt to their gardens & Homes. The Soul Projects are specifically designed for education.

NEWT & NONSENSE — QUIZ & TREASURE HUNT FAQs

Collapsible content

What is the purpose of Newt & Nonsense?

It:

  • sparks laughter
  • rewards curiosity
  • breaks up classroom overwhelm
  • teaches patience

  • builds confidence
  • strengthens SEL
  • creates joy

Do all age bands get the same quiz?

No — each age band has its own version, story difficulty, and challenge.

Is this the only screen moment in the program?

Yes.

Once a week, children upload their answer after completing the hide-and-seek treasure hunt on the Mai-Newt website.

Everything else is screen-free.
