Curriculum Alignment Summary

How our learning connects with the Western Australian Homeschool Curriculum

Wigglewood Curriculum Alignment Summary

A Note for Parents

Every Wigglewood lesson, journal prompt, and care activity is intentionally aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline for homeschoolers.

Our goal isn’t to overwhelm you with codes or outcomes — it’s to give you the confidence that each week of Wigglewood learning builds the same foundational skills as traditional schooling, with far more joy and connection.

“Wigglewood follows the curriculum — but leads with curiosity.”

How wigglewood meets the outcome
  • Visual Arts & Creative Expression

Creative journaling and sketching connect art to science, helping learners express observations visually.

    EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES

Drawing seed stages, creating botanical collages, designing garden labels.

    ...............................................

  • Design & Technologies

Learners engage in hands-on problem-solving — planning, experimenting, and adjusting care techniques. They design mini garden systems, test solutions, and evaluate results.

    EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES

Designing a watering system, comparing soil types, testing plant supports.

    ...............................................

  • English (Literacy & Communication)

Writing, speaking, and reflecting are built into every journal prompt.

Students practise clear expression through stories, labels, descriptions, and reflections.

    EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES

Journal writing, seedling stories, labelling plant parts, oral reflections.

    ...............................................

  • Mathematics (Measurement & Data)

Learners record height, count leaves, compare moisture levels, and represent data visually.

They practise estimation, measurement, and interpreting simple graphs.

    EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES

Measuring growth in cm, plotting graphs, estimating seed counts.

    ...............................................

  • HASS (Humanities & Social Sciences)

Students develop an awareness of their local environment, sustainability, and the role humans play in caring for the land.

    EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES

Discussing seasons, identifying local native plants, composting routines.

    ...............................................

  • Health & Wellbeing (SEL)

Each kit integrates mindfulness, patience, and empathy. Students learn about emotional regulation through routine, responsibility, and observation.

    EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES

Reflection prompts, “Care Check” days, Newt & Nonsense laughter breaks.

    ...............................................

  • Science (Biological & Earth Sciences)

Students explore living systems by observing, measuring, and recording the growth of seedlings. They learn about life cycles, habitats, and the effect of environmental changes.

    EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES

Measuring sunlight, watering routines, tracking germination, observing leaf changes.

    ...............................................

  • Digital Technologies

Older learners use digital tools to document growth, log data, or photograph experiments — building digital literacy safely and purposefully.

    EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES

Digital journal entries, photography, simple data charts.

    ...............................................

  • Cross-Curricular Priorities

Wigglewood naturally supports several cross-curricular themes within the WA Curriculum:

    Sustainability

Understanding how choices affect living systems and the environment.

    Personal & Social Capability

Building empathy, self-management, and respect through care routines.

    Critical & Creative Thinking

Applying evidence, reflection, and imagination to problem-solving.

    Ethical Understanding

Learning respect for living things and responsible environmental actions.

    ...............................................

  • The Wigglewood Learning Cycle

Every program (whether Wiggleworms or Nearly Newts) follows the same gentle rhythm:

    Observe

Looking closely at changes and patterns.

    Curiosity, attention to detail, patience.

    Record

Capturing what they see and think.

    Literacy, communication, data collection.

    Reflect

Asking “what does this tell me?”

    Critical thinking, emotional awareness.

    Adjust

    Making small, thoughtful changes.

    Problem-solving, resilience, adaptability.

    Share

Expressing discoveries through story, art, or data.

    Collaboration, confidence, presentation.

Everything inside each kit connects to the Western Australian Curriculum, but you won’t find any heavy jargon or endless paperwork here. Instead, you’ll find real-world learning that grows right alongside your students.

Each planting, observation, and journal reflection quietly ticks off curriculum outcomes across Science, English, Design & Technologies, and Wellbeing — without ever feeling forced.

It’s learning that makes sense in the hands, the heart, and the garden.

Put simply: every newt, notebook, and nudge toward curiosity is already doing the curriculum work for you

Collapsible content

Is the program fully aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum?

Yes. Every Wigglewood lesson, reflection, and challenge maps directly to key curriculum outcomes for Science, English, Design & Technologies, and Wellbeing. Curriculum links are outlined in your Educator Pack and on each age-band page.

Do I need to adapt the activities to make them curriculum-aligned?

No — everything is already designed to meet required learning areas. Teachers and homeschool parents can use Wigglewood lessons exactly as written, or extend them using the optional “STEM & SEL Extension” prompts.

Which subjects are covered?

Wigglewood naturally connects Science, English, Design & Technologies, Humanities, Health, and the Arts through gardening and environmental care. These cross-curricular experiences make it easy to meet multiple outcomes with a single project.

How do students show evidence of learning?

Student journals, photos, growth charts, and reflections serve as authentic assessment evidence. Templates are included in every kit and in the Educator Hub.

Can I use Wigglewood with mixed-age classrooms or composite classes?

Yes. Each term’s materials include differentiated challenges so students of different ages can work together while meeting age-appropriate outcomes.

Does the curriculum change each term?

Yes — every term introduces new STEM and SEL themes while keeping the same learning rhythm. This ensures returning students experience fresh projects and continued growth throughout the year.

Can Wigglewood be used outside Western Australia?

Absolutely. While built on the WA framework, it aligns closely with the Australian Curriculum and can easily adapt to national or international contexts.
